FDA Walks Back Cyclospora False Positive

Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld used his role as Board chairman to make public safety the theme of the upcoming State of the County event and helped create an action-movie-style promotional video featuring himself. The $7,000 chamber-funded production has drawn both praise for its creativity and criticism over its use of law-enforcement imagery and its focus on Bredefeld as the star. 

The FDA has withdrawn its earlier claim that a Taylor Farms lettuce sample tested positive for Cyclospora, saying the test result was a false positive. While the agency still suspects lettuce in the Taco Bell supply chain may be involved, there is currently no laboratory-confirmed food sample tying the parasite to the outbreak, and investigators are continuing to search for definitive proof.

Many Fresno residents are pushing back against the city's network of Flock cameras, arguing they represent excessive surveillance and a threat to privacy. Fresno Police maintain that the cameras are a valuable investigative tool that has helped solve homicides and shootings, stressing that the system does not use facial recognition and operates under data-sharing restrictions. The Washington Post opinion piece argues that higher education is losing public trust because many academic institutions have become overly insulated and ideologically homogeneous. McArdle uses a recent controversy involving anthropology scholars and a university-commissioned report as evidence that academia often responds defensively to criticism, which she believes further undermines confidence in colleges and universities. 

Two North Dakota men learned through DNA testing that they had been raised by the wrong families after allegedly being switched at birth in 1988. They and their parents are now suing Unity Medical Center, claiming the mistake cost them decades of relationships and experiences. While the hospital acknowledges the switch occurred, it says there is no evidence proving the hospital caused it and that records from that era no longer exist.

Voters would only decide whether to remove an official, while a separate process would determine who fills the vacancy afterward. Supporters say the change prevents political manipulation and ensures fairer outcomes, while opponents say it reduces voters' direct control over choosing replacements.
